Why did you start taking Spinning® classes?

I loved cycling! I was 19 or 20 and used to cycle 24 miles round trip to university everyday and one day on the way into the uni gym. I saw this class happening on the gym floor and said I want to try that! I haven't looked back 15 years later!

What inspired you to become a Certified Spinning® Instructor and then a Master Instructor?

I personally knew I had the talent to to teach and was so hungry for knowledge on the program. The classes I went to brought me so much joy, fitness and personal release that I wanted to become part of it. Getting certified was a unquestionable for me.I never had aspired to be a Master Instructor--that was something I had not thought about--Master Instructors were people I always held is such awe and high regard. When I was recommended by Star Trac Middle East to Mad Dogg Athletics to be sent on an MI camp, it was a huge shock but such an honor at the same time. Geographically living in the UAE, coming from Ireland, it's a very different territory but I have whole-heartedly taken on the role and three years as an MI in this region, Spinning® has become very successful and is rapidly growing here!

What do you love about teaching Spinning® classes?

I love that I always look forward to teaching, I love that members and clients are always happy to participate. Spinning makes people better at everything! Most of all, it's something that I know I can fully change people mentally and physically.

What are your top three favorite songs to play during your Spinning® classes and why?

Oh wow! That's an unfair question, I simply cannot choose! I love instrumental music. I love many artists and genres and use music from all over the world. Music is a huge part of what we do but at the end of the day its a back drop to enhance the ride and connect with riders.

What makes Spinning® such a great workout?

Spinning is a great workout because it's a training session, we actually put planning into what we do. We use Spinning to train for peak performance and have members and clients reach their potential. It takes patience, determination, mental strength and perseverance, which in turn will gives a great sense of self accomplishment.

Share a memory from your experience as a teacher/coach/presenter that embodies the value of being a Certified Spinning® Instructor or Spinning® Master Instructor.

Being able to certify people is something huge that very few understand - we are essentially giving licences to instructors to go out and change peoples lives and minds. As a Master Instructor, I continually have the honor and pleasure of allowing individuals to have huge self belief that yes, they can do this job and yes, they are good enough. I've had two occasions where instructors have broken down in instructor trainings--one in the initial training and one in a continuing education workshop. It can be a very tough journey for some getting up on the bike to teach and putting all your own fears to bed. With these two individuals, I had the sheer pleasure of watching them go on to teach here in the Emirates and in Beirut in Lebanon - it then in turn brought tears to my eyes that their journey was continuing in the right direction. I also certify gym instructors and personal trainers and Spinning always takes first place in my heart.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a Certified Spinning® Instructor?

Do it! Take classes and develop a good fitness base. Find a role model but be sure to get certified!

Rose07What’s one of your favorite motivational quotes?

"You're here because of you, not because of me."

Do you have a hero in the Spinning® community, someone who deserves recognition for their leadership?

I am located in Dubai UAE. It has not been an easy journey here and I have a lot of heroes, please let me mention them all! Sarah Morelli was instrumental in getting our trainings legalized over here--we are REPs accredited and her help was huge to me. Peter Pastijn has recently moved to the UAE and it's so great to have such a huge presence in the Spinning community available here. My Spinning sister, Gina Grant in Egypt and Kuwait, has also been a super support in pushing education and supporting events. Most of all, the leadership that deserves recognition are the instructors on the ground! They do tireless work driving our program and keeping our standards high, I love them all.

Is there anything about you that would surprise people?

I used to be an open sea swimmer when I was living in Ireland and a qualified mountain leader.Rose O' Donovan is the master instructor for the UAE since 2012.
