Why did you start taking Spinning® classes?
My first class was in 2006 after a background of competitive Triathlon and Road Cycling. I became "time poor" like many people and needed a change from hour on the road training individually.
What inspired you to become a Certified Spinning® Instructor and then a Master Instructor?
My background has always been in fitness and originally I graduated from University specializing in Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology. Years of coaching poolside in a gym gave me a great background in the motivators of fitness, and life experience around coaching a diverse range of people. Becoming a Certified Spinning® Instructor gave me the opportunity to take that experience to the bike and class environment. Great instructors and role models inspired me, and I learned from instructors that perhaps had a few things to learn themselves. The opportunity to become a Master Instructor came up as our business moved into Asia and as a region there was huge opportunity and demand for locally based MIs.
What do you love about teaching Spinning® classes?
By far the biggest reward is the feedback from the riders during and post class. Often in our busy lives we become ‘transactional’ in what we do. There is nothing better than seeing people achieve goals, gain confidence, have fun and over time transform themselves through the Spinning program. I’ve built lifelong friendships with a huge range of people and the thank yous and the smiles from riders at the end of the class is gold.
What are your top three favorite songs to play during your Spinning® classes and why?
I like a diverse range of music but I’ve been known for having a reasonable component of rock music dependent on the type of ride.
- "Tusk" – Fleetwood Mac is a great building hill climb track with the odd jump option for good measure
- "Turn the Page" - Metallica's version of the Bob Segar classic has a great rhythm for a seated work session
- ACDC – Almost any of their tracks are great. "Hells Bells" for Climbing, "Thunderstruck" for intensity on Race Day.
What makes Spinning® such a great workout?
The best thing are about Spinning® from my viewpoint is that it is “programmed”. Each ride has a purpose and structure to it and therefore that becomes the best workout. Often it’s a purposeful steady state ride, or low intensity endurance. But when the hammer goes down and time is right it can be the hardest most challenging training session around.
Share a memory from your experience as a teacher/coach/presenter that embodies the value of being a Certified Spinning® Instructor or Spinning® Master Instructor.
What I like the most is so many people can and do achieve different things from the program. I’ve seen exceptional weight loss and body transformations resulting in a ‘whole person’ change, through to people recovering from injury and regaining fitness and body image lost over the years. One great thing was watching a romance slowly evolve between two regular riders. Starting on opposite sides of the room, slowing changing bikes over months to be closer and then talking, enjoying coffee after and now they are married.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about becoming a Certified Spinning® Instructor?
The best thing is to not even think about it and just go out and take a certification. Worst thing is you learn a lot more about the program, training in general, bike set up and safety for your own benefit. More than likely you will be like thousands of others who start as riders and then add their personality to the teaching of the program.
What’s one of your favorite motivational quotes?
If it is to be, it is up to me. | The older I get the better I was.
Do you have a hero in the Spinning® community, someone who deserves recognition for their leadership?
Natashia Iacovelli has championed the program in Australia for many years and deserves the recognition she gets.
Is there anything about you that would surprise people?
I have represented New Zealand in Triathlon and raced 4 IRONMAN® Triathlons, but at the same time have a passion
for beer, tequila and cowboy boots.
